Conflict Resolution – Cheat Sheet

June 22, 2010

One of the topics that comes up regularly in all the classes is how to manage conflict.  I must make the following disclaimer now – there are no “cookie cutter’ solutions to conflict management.  Conflict must be viewed in the context of the environment in which it occurred.  A technique that works for one person may not work for another.  Successful conflict resolution is a skill that requires practice.  However, there are “tried and true” guidelines to lead you through the minefields.

I have attached a link to a conflict resolution cheat sheet that I found on the Conflict Resolution at Work for Dummies site.  Despite my absolute loathing of the naming of the “for dummies” franchise, they often have some good basic information.  I particularly like this cheat sheet because it is short and to the point and offers good reminders that may be helpful when conflict heats up.

Conflict Resolution Cheat Sheet

In times of conflict remember to stay calm and work to defuse the situation.  Listening should always be the first step.  I can not tell you how many times the simple act of listening to someone reduced the emotional level of the situation immediately.  Despite the overpowering feeling that you must “say something”, if someone is on a rant, let them rant until they are finished.  Interruptions tend to inject more fuel into the fire.

How do you resolve conflict?  What techniques have  been successful for you?
