Qualities of Effective Project Managers

July 16, 2010

Came across this article and thought I would share with the group.

Anatomy of an Effective Project Manager

While I agree with the traits that they mentioned, I would add a few of my own to the list.

The effective project managers that I have observed, worked with or heard about share the qualities from this article but also have some or all of the following:

  • Insatiable curiosity about everything
  • Personal and professional integrity
  • A deep love  of what they do
  • High level of competency in Project Management, Interpersonal Skills and their areas of expertise

Are there characteristics that I missed?  If so, share with the group.

What about organizational and planning skills? Is that covered under Project Management competency?

Good question. Organizational and planning skills are an integral part of Project Management. We can find further detail about them in the 9 knowledge areas as outlined by PMBOK:
      Project Integration Management
      Project Scope Management
      Project Time Management
      Project Cost Management
      Project Quality Management
      Project Human Resource Management
      Project Communications Management
      Project Risk Management
      Project Procurement Management
