Think about your best team experience.  What made that team stand out in your mind?  What are the characteristics of a high performance team.  When selecting team members (if we have that option), we often consider their technical skills or subject matter expertise without regard to their interpersonal skills or ability to work together as a team.  Yet, when I think about teams that have not performed well,  the problems are rarely due to technical or subject matter expertise.  While I am not proposing that team composition should be based entirely on interpersonal skills,  the ability to work well with others is certainly an asset.  Check out  HBR’s 3 Characteristics of a a Real Team.
